Visit the birthplace of the American Revolution and home to a notorious Civil War spy on this small group walking tour. Discover Church Hill's colorful past and how it has produced a cadre of restless spirits in its buildings, its graveyards and under its streets.

Cloaked in the shadows of the quaint and historical Church Hill neighborhood, this small group tour includes spirited tales you're sure to love.

You'll hear about Crazy Bet, a woman who risked her life and reputation as a war spy and tour her old stomping grounds; Edgar Allan Poe's first and last love, the elusive Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton; and visit the oldest public cemetery in Richmond, on the grounds of St. John's Church, where many of Poe's loved ones are buried.

Departure Time:

9:00 pm Saturday (May through October)

Richmond's Shockoe Hill Cemetery is the backdrop for this historical and haunted tour.

On this tour of Church Hill, you'll hear the story of Elizabeth Van Lew, abolitionist and Union spy, who is said to have feigned lunacy (she was called Crazy Bet) in order to hide her underground activity. You'll see the Bellevue school, the site where her wealthy family's mansion stood and hear how even witnesses today still see Lizzie! Her headstone, donated by Paul Revere himself, is in the Shockoe Hill Cemetery.

Another important figure of Church Hill is Edgar Allan Poe's lost love, Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton. Considered by many to be Poe's true love, when the two announced their engagement, Elmira's father sabotaged it by destroying Poe's letters to Elmira. Thinking he forgot about her, she married another, devastating the young Poe. Two decades later, she became widowed and the two were reunited. Prior to the wedding, Poe traveled to give a lecture, only to die days before they were to be married. Her headstone is also part of the cemetery landscape.
